Cherry Laurel, 'Otto Luyken' Cherry Laurel

€42
Type: Shrub
Mature size (H x W): 1m x 1.5m
Flowering period: May, June, August, September
Usage: Hedge plant
This very dense shrub, which does not exceed 1m in height at maturity, is ideal for creating low hedges, whether trimmed or untrimmed. The narrow, glossy green leaves provide a backdrop for the very abundant white flowers, appearing in 20 cm clusters in late spring and often again at the end of summer, provided it is not pruned. The fruits are toxic.

Ever since its introduction to Europe in the 16th century, the cherry laurel has been popular with gardeners due to its ability to withstand pruning. They immediately used it for creating evergreen hedges and garden arbours. The standard cherry laurel, when planted as a specimen, can reach 8 meters in height. Current cultivars are somewhat smaller. Depending on the chosen variety, they can reach between 1m and 5 meters in height, adapting equally well to small and large gardens. Its dense foliage and compact habit make it a premier shrub for creating privacy hedges. However, if left free-growing or only lightly pruned, the center of the shrub will gradually thin out, and it will lose its compact form. The cherry laurel prefers relatively cool, well-drained, and lime-free soils. The leaves (which contain hydrocyanic acid), fruits, and all parts of the cherry laurel are toxic to humans. Nevertheless, cooks have long used the leaves to impart a subtle bitter almond flavor to creams and dairy desserts. But it is best to be cautious if one does not know how to use them. A miscalculation in dosage and the dessert becomes poison.
