'Andega' Blackcurrant - Ribes Nigrum / 3 L pot
Its plump black berries are very tasty and sweet. They can be enjoyed right after picking or processed. Large, deciduous, and fragrant green leaves. Abundant harvest from July to August. This blackcurrant variety shows good resistance to diseases, particularly powdery mildew. Very hardy, Ribes nigrum is ideal for cold regions.
The 'Andega' variety was obtained from the 'Noir de Bourgogne' blackcurrant bush by INRA in Angers. Just like currants, blackcurrants belong to the Grossulariaceae family (the Latin name is Ribes nigrum). This fruit shrub naturally takes the form of a clump. Its green, serrated leaves are very dense. Its flowering of small greenish-yellow flowers is rather late, appearing at the end of April.
This variety is very hardy; freezing temperatures (minimum -5°C) stimulate the blackcurrant bush's fruit production. A sunny exposure is necessary to obtain a good fruit yield. This plant bears generous clusters of blackcurrants with melting flesh; its berries contain very few seeds. They are particularly fragrant, and their flavor is both sweet and tangy. The blackcurrants begin to ripen from the beginning of July; they can be eaten fresh or in pastries. 'Andega' blackcurrants are delicious in tarts, jellies, or crumbles.
This shrub can be grown in a pot or in the ground. It prefers cool, clayey soils. Its climbing habit can reach up to 1.50m; it requires being trained on wires or cables.
