'Red Cascade' European Spindle
The 'Red Cascade' spindle tree is a bushy shrub with deciduous, medium-green foliage that turns red in autumn. Its rather insignificant spring flowering is followed in late summer by numerous pinkish-red fruits, which reveal shiny orange seeds when they open; these are toxic to humans and many animals, but enjoyed by birds. The branches arch gracefully under the weight of the fruit, hence the shrub's name.
The European spindle is found in its natural state across a large part of Europe, from Sweden to central Spain and as far as Western Siberia, typically in plains and at altitudes of up to 800 meters. It is a very hardy, slow-growing, medium-sized shrub with a rather slender and irregular habit. Not very demanding in terms of soil quality, it nevertheless prefers well-drained but cool soil, especially during hot weather. The twigs of this shrub, when turned into charcoal, produce the drawing charcoal used by artists.
