This dense, bushy, gradually spreading shrub is certainly the best-known cherry laurel. The large, oblong, glossy, dark green leaves make the spikes of small, simple white flowers stand out. These are followed by red, then black, poisonous fruit. This cherry laurel is widely used for compact, evergreen hedges.
Since its introduction to Europe in the 16th century, the cherry laurel has been popular with gardeners due to its ability to withstand pruning. They immediately used it for creating evergreen hedges and garden enclosures. The standard cherry laurel, when planted as a specimen, can reach 8 meters in height. Current cultivars are somewhat smaller. Depending on the variety chosen, they can reach between 1m and 5 meters in height, adapting equally well to small and large gardens. Its dense foliage and compact habit make it a premier shrub for creating privacy hedges. However, if left untrimmed or only lightly pruned, the center of the shrub will gradually thin out and it will lose its compact form. The cherry laurel likes relatively cool, well-drained, and lime-free soils. The leaves (which contain hydrocyanic acid), the fruit, and all parts of the cherry laurel are toxic to humans. Nevertheless, for a very long time, cooks have used the leaves to impart a slight bitter almond taste to creams and dairy products. But it is better to be cautious if you do not know how to use it. A dosage error and the dessert becomes poison.
