Photinia x fraseri is a hybrid, resulting from the cross of two species: Photinia glabra and serrulata. 'Red Robin' is an excellent horticultural variety, widely used for hedges. This shrub, with an upright habit, reaches 3 m in height and 2 m in width. Evergreen foliage, very bright due to its glossy young shoots, red at the start of the growing season, then dark green afterwards. Leaves are oval, elongated, and pointed, measuring 8 to 12 cm. Small, cream-white flowers in 10 cm diameter panicles appear in May and are not very decorative. Grows in normal, well-drained soil. Tolerates limestone. Sun exposure. Hardy down to -12°C. Withstands pruning well. Summer pruning encourages the growth of highly decorative red young shoots. It can be planted as a specimen, in flower beds, combined in informal hedges, or as a formal hedge.
